My mother's bedtime ritual was pin curling her hair every night. She wore it up in a bun most of her adult life. I never could figure out how she got those curls until Bernadette's comment about not twisting the hair around itself before rolling the curl up. Thank you!

I love line dried clothes but I will say a couple of times when the wind was from the wrong direction my clothes ended up smelling like a feed lot (Cow poop) and a sugar beet factory (if you haven’t smelled this 🤢) but generally prefer it.

This is the exact hairstyle my mom uses every day--only without the pin curling because her hair is naturally wavy. She doesn't get so much floof in the front though.

I find pin curl silicone rollers way easier as they contain and cover the end of the curl much easier, then you can wear a stretchy cap on top to keep them in place. I couldn't get on with pinning them like you, my hair was having none of it 😭

I have curly hair but when I don't want to bother to do the 37-steps routine to just not be a lookalike of a bird's nest, my choice is pincurls. Excellent results, I have 1/4 of Bernadette's hair so it takes me 10 minutes in total and lasts up to 4 days.

Bar type laundry soap was still in use among some well into the 1960s, Ibe brand, Fels Naptha Soap, had a promotion where if you sent in a sufficient amount of labels they would send you a "soap grater" to make things easier. I followed my grandmother's recommendations and got some Fels Naphtha Soap for use on stains in U.S. Navy White Uniforms. "Washing Soda" is very much a standard in my laundry room. Washing soda acts to keep minerals in water in solution and not precipitating out in the presence of higher pH detergent. This is extremely important if you are using chlorine based bleach with white natural fabrics. If y our whites come from the laundry sightly yellow or gray, that is the minerals in your water supply being caused to precipitate onto your laundry. ... I learned what to do from my Grandmother. I learned why it worked in a college chemistry class. There was one brand of "spot remover" that was on the grocery store shelves well into the 1990s that was, and still is in other countries, pure naphtha... i.e. pure white clear gasoline. Using a gasoline rinse was common in laundry until "safety solvents" were developed in the 1930s... we know those safety solvents today as "dry cleaning fluid". <grin> Rinsing with the gasoline was an early dry cleaning process. I never witnessed or help with manual laundry. By the time I was born, my grandmother had a washer ad dryer. But, out at my grandfather's cattle pastures located outside of town, there was a huge cast iron kettle with tall feet what had a square of metal cloth over it to use for grilling when we went out fishing. I asked about it when I was five and was told that was the old laundry kettle where the work clothes would be simmered in soapy water then rinsed in washtubs of cold water. The laundry kettle was retired in the 1930s when they got the first old manual wringer washing machine. I remember my mother using the stich and bluing for her hospital uniforms. In the 1970s, hospital quite providing uniforms for employees and laid off all the hospital laundry workers that had traditionally laundered, starched, and pressed uniforms. But, it wasn't until almost the end of the 1980s that white starched pristine uniforms were no longer required for hospital workers. By the by, you need a sprinkler bottle for the ironing. I think I still have a tin sprinkler top that was from the 19th century (they don't wear out) designed to be put into the top of a beverage bottle to sprinkle water onto the ironing as you work. .... flashback to keeping the white hospital uniforms damp a bit while I ironed them flat and put in the appropriate creases. I was so proud of being able to do that when I was eight years old.

I decided to attempt this, but alas, it just turned into a coarse, frizzy mess. If you have dry / dyed hair, I've read putting conditioner in the bottom third off your hair before doing the pin curls helps. I'll try that next time. Also, curl the ends VERY carefully

As someone who washes her hair once a day on most days ( i.e pretty often ), I can't believe that curls stayed up through the week. Probably because I just hate that I can't wash my hair as often as I like if I'm in that sort if hairstyle, nontheless, it does look good on you, Bernadette!
